DUSHANBE, October 17, 2014, Asia-Plus – On Friday October 17, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received visiting Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the sides discussed a broad range of issues related to security cooperation between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation.

A special attention was reportedly paid to cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism and trafficking in drugs and weapons as well as in strengthening information security.

Rahmon and Patrushev also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and necessary measures to reinforce Tajikistan’s common border with Afghanistan.

They also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest.

Meanwhile, some Russian media sources quoted Russian Security Council spokesman Igor Shvytkin as saying that Rahmon and Patrushev also discussed ways to promote further military cooperation and arms trade between Russia and Tajikistan.

Patrushev reportedly visited Russia''s military base in Tajikistan.

Nikolai Patrushev is a Russian political and security figure. He was Director of the Russian FSB, the successor organization to the KGB, from 1999 to 2008, and he has been Secretary of the Security Council of Russia since 2008.
